Independent local restaurants and their staffs are being crushed by the coronavirus.
We already know that MILLIONS of hospitality workers are being laid off, but it may be months before we have official unemployment data on the full impact. Add on top of that the typical unemployment process takes 4-6 weeks before an individual gets a check.
THAT'S TOO LONG.
LOCAL, STATE, and FEDERAL OFFICIALS MUST ACT NOW.
We are compiling and sharing this data to express the urgency and severity of the crisis.
Independent local restaurants don't have the cash reserves to keep their employees on payroll while they are closed. So far, restaurants that are still open for "takeaway only" have reported that they have laid off 88%* of their staff.
It is a public health necessity to close restaurants across the country, but it cannot come at the expense of hospitality works. We must support the MILLIONS of workers who don't have a safety net.
If you are a restaurant, please share your unemployment information below so we can compile it and get the numbers out there. Everything will remain anonymous.
*Based on an inKind survey of the 400 restaurants that it has financed and restaurant self-reported data submitted to inKind.
